3.28.18: Meeting Our Host Families

Bonjour à tout,
Today we started our first full day in Carcassonne with our host families. We enjoyed an authentic French breakfast that consisted of fresh brioche, Nutella, and café au lait. After our petit-déjeuner, our host families drove us to a local high school to meet our group. From there, we traveled to la cité, the walled city of Carcassonne. First, we toured the medieval castle with the help of our Global Works Guide, Taylor, who knew a lot about the architecture and history. After our tour, we were given free time to explore la cité and the local, artisan shops. By the time we were finished, we were all hungry. Thankfully, each of our host families packed us lunch to enjoy picnic style in la cité. After lunch, we took vans to our service project. We met Bernard, our Service Project Coordinator, who explained the work we’d be doing over the next few days. It was a restoration project for a wall that the people of Carcassonne plan to make into bee hives to support local agriculture. We spent the rest day removing grass and rocks from the crumbling wall. After a strenuous three hours of service, we returned to our host families for dinner. Overall, the weather made our day perfect; specifically, the day was very sunny and around 65 degrees.
