Seventh Grade IL, Day Three: Washington, D. C.

Afterwards, all the museum groups met up to go on a walking tour of D.C. We saw famous landmarks such as the Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, and the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, where we enjoyed beautiful vistas surrounded by blooming cherry blossoms. We were amazed by the grand size of the monuments and the surrounding area. It felt refreshing to be out of the classroom and experience the beauty of nature.

Yesterday, seventh graders traveled to Washington D.C. for an overnight trip. We felt fortunate for an opportunity to ride on a coach bus, which made the three hours more comfortable and amusing. When we arrived, students went to museums of their choice. Their options were: The Natural History Museum, The Hirshhorn Museum, and The National Museum of African American History and Culture.

Here’s what students had to say about their experience at the museums:

“I thought it was cool to see different types of art because it’s not what you normally see in other museums, which made it more unique.” – Anna Floyd (Hirshhorn Museum)

“I thought it was fun and had a lot of interesting facts. In the gem part there were lots of details and facts next to the gems and lots of intricate designs.” – Nick Barruco (Natural History Museum)

“I thought it was very interesting how the different levels of the museum showed different highlights of black history and the accomplishments over the years.” – Margo Macaluso (National Museum of African American History and Culture)

The Steinbruck Center welcomed us to stay at their facility. The overnight aspect of the trip allows students to bond with each other in ways they normally can’t at school.

Tomorrow we are excited to go to the National Zoo and see the red pandas!
