Today our day started out with testing and making prototypes for Youth Engineering and Science (YES). YES travels around to different recreation centers in under-resourced neighborhoods of Philadelphia to bring children opportunities to experiment in the fields of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics). We repaired carts to test safety features that can be put together by using some simple items, we cut some sponges and foam to become the safety items, and made prototypes for three different activities. The items were earthquake proof homes that were made out of straws, toothbrush robots that vibrated and moved, and bracelets that were wired to illuminate LED lights. Once we finished with the YES work we listened to presentations that were put together by the Design Thinking Intensive Learning group. After listening to the presentations and having lunch we gathered together again and formed assembly lines to make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for the Cathedral Kitchen. A very successful day of service well done.
