On day #2 our group at the Pine Barrens went to the Woodford Cedar Run Wildlife Refuge with our tour guide Erin. We took a hike down the white trail and learned about the fauna of the Pine Barrens. We learned about sphagnum moss and teaberry leaves (which tasted like mint). Also, we learned the difference between pitch and white pine by looking at the needles on the trees. Then we looked at many different animals throughout the reserve. We saw many types of birds and owls along with a talking crow. After we were done observing the animals we ate lunch back at the building.
When we were done with lunch we split into 2 groups in order to complete service. Matt, Jack, and Hunter split off and set up the storybook along the white trail. They later joined everyone else who were raking leaves and pines at the time to clear the trails.
We were very happy to help at the refuge, as they are providing a necessary service to the wildlife in the South Jersey area. Many of us hope to come back and volunteer again! We’re looking forward to a guided hike tomorrow.
