Today on the forge was a great start to what seems like an amazing experience. The resident blacksmith, Bruce Gill, gave us some safety tips and directions for setting up the forge — it had been all covered up to protect it from the recent snowstorm.
Although we did not get to make anything yet, we got a tour of the historical Harriton House, which has a very interesting history. It was home to Charles Thomson, Secretary of the Continental Congress and one of the two original signers of Declaration of Independence. We even saw the writing table where the document was signed! Mr. Thomson (the history teacher, not the historical figure) had a fan moment with Chef Walter Staib, star of the TV show A Taste of History. After lunch, we got right to work, and finished our day with a quick snowball fight, for fun. It already seems like blacksmithing was the right choice for Intensive Learning.
