Today we further explored the work of improvisation. Our teachers led us through many activities throughout the day. We started with team building exercises and slowly worked our way up to larger scale improvisation. During these exercises, we had the opportunity to push ourselves out of our comfort zones. After lunch we did an activity called Tableaus where we chose a movie and had to pick the five most important scenes. As we performed them for the others in the group, they had to guess what film we were depicting. Next, we started to address our group’s focus topic, which was gender. For the start of this exercise, we listed the words the group associated with gender as a whole. We used some of these words for a “sculpting” activity. This activity allowed us to “sculpt” one of our group members into an expression of a word/phrase. We turned the last sculpture into an improvisation skit. The word was dress-code and the two “sculptures” came to life to act out the scenario at hand. We culminated with a group discussion that allowed us to address these issues in a meaningful way.
