Arts & Entertainment, Day Five: Gradwell House Recording Studio

The Gradwell House is known for its accessibility and affordability to upcoming and indie artists who are looking to find their place in the music scene. The studio has had several well-known local bands and high-profile artists come through over the years, and they participate in large-scale projects like music accompaniment for the Super Bowl. In the Arts and Entertainment Intensive Learning group today we took a tour of the recording studio and concluded our projects in the space.

When we arrived at the studio, we were greeted by Matt Weber, who was the head engineer at the Gradwell House and his intern, named Jay. Matt took us on a tour of the recording space where we saw the various rooms where artists could record on the piano, drums, guitar and on vocals. Some of the rooms were designed for instrumental recording with strong acoustics and some were designed for listening to the recordings with cloth walls that absorbed the acoustics, which meant that the audio was extremely clear.

Once the tour of the studio had concluded students began to start on their recording projects. We had spent our free time during Intensive Learning working on songs that we would sing and record at the Gradwell House. There was also the option to play an instrument for the recording and a few students opted into playing the drums, guitar and piano instead of singing. We had a nice variety of students doing individual performances, group songs, and original pieces! Once everyone had finished recording their own parts we all moved across the street and finished the outing with lunch at Ralph’s Pizza. Overall, we had a great day, and we look forward to finishing out our Arts and Entertainment time tomorrow!
