Today, the Arts and Entertainment group visited Cambridge Sound Studios, where many famous artists have recorded, including The Rolling Stones. At the studio, we learned about the technology behind recording and how artists put together records and actors record voice-overs for film. When we first entered the studio, we sat in what’s called “the live room.” This is the room where artists actually do the recording. It was filled with different microphones, cables, headphones, and instruments. We were lucky enough to be able to record some songs in the live room while the other students watched in the control room. We were shown how the live room and control room are connected as well. One of the sound engineers, Zack, showed us what each specific piece of equipment did and gave us the history of the building’s origins. Jim Salamone, who is one of the main engineers at Cambridge, gave us the tour and talked about how the music industry has changed over the years and how artists today make money.
Jim brought us to a room that contained the different programs that are used to edit and mix the tracks once they are recorded. Unfortunately, the computers were not functioning properly during our visit, but we were able to see what would have been done if they had worked correctly. The studio will be sending us all of our recordings so we get to listen to the final projects. We are very excited to get to hear their amazing work! Cambridge Sound Studios was then nice enough to treat us to a pizza party which we all enjoyed. Overall, our trip to Cambridge Sound Studios was a blast, and we can’t wait to do more this week!
