Asian Culture Day Three: Judaism

Today we went to synagogue, Temple Emanuel, and we met Rabbi Isaacs. He taught us about Judaism and asked us some interesting questions. The synagogue was gorgeous. The stained glass windows were beautiful. The ark was made of flames to resemble God’s eternal light and presence. In the ark there were six scrolls (Torah) and we read a portion from one. One of the scrolls was over 300 years old. We learned about Jewish holidays such as Passover, Yom Kippur, Rosh Hashanah, Hanukkah, and many other holidays.

After going to the temple, we went to the Holocaust Museum at the Jewish Community Center. We learned about the stories of Holocaust survivors and saw some of their possessions. We saw how they would have lived and the conditions at Auschwitz.

Then we went to the Kibitz Room where we had very large sandwiches and very large Matzo Ball soup. Afterward we rode back to school and worked on our projects. All in all, it was an interesting and educational day.
