Asian Culture IL Day One: Cambodian Day

The area we visited today is considered a cultural hub for Cambodians.

  • There is a very good sense of community in the Cambodian society and culture in South Philadelphia.
  • The neighborhood today used to be an old Jewish community.
  • During the Vietnam War, Cambodia was bombed by U.S.
  • Most of Cambodian people in U.S. are from the refugee camps in 1980s.
  • Khmer is the language in Cambodia.
  • When greeting someone, the older/higher status that the person is, the higher you raise your hands when greeting them.
  • Cambodia, today, is a democratic monarchy.
  • In Cambodia, the prime minister holds most of the power (same prime minister since 1979).
  • Back in the day, rich people would ride around on elephants.
  • Special crowns were considered idolic.
  • In Thailand, there is a different type of Kemai spoken that is mixed with some Thai.
  • A typical Cambodian meal is rice based with vegetables, meat, or other foods.
