For our second day of Intensive Learning, we went back to Bayshore at Bivalve to help out with some more service.
The first thing we did once we arrived was help out with some administrative work upstairs, since the weather was pretty chilly in the morning. They gave us a stack of letters, envelopes, and brochures that were to be sent to various people. Each envelope was addressed to people who had helped out at the site, and contained the letter and a brochure. Our task was to ensure that the right envelopes were addressed to the right people in the letter before we sealed them. We had to do about 200 of these letters, but we ended up finishing the work in about 45 minutes.
Over the course of two days, we helped Bayshore paint an old boxcar that will eventually be used as the public bathrooms on site. We used red paint on the outside of the boxcar, while the inside is almost finished with renovations. Our job this time was to apply a second layer of paint to the car. We finished this in around an hour and gave some touch-ups to the boxcar as well. Some of us had to go down on the railroad tracks, which was pretty cool, while others up top had to be careful not to spill paint on people’s heads! The boxcar came out really well in the end!
After eating our lunches on the dock we got to go on a short biking path right behind the Bayshore property. Some things we saw were cranes, scarecrows, and a whole lot of wheat. We had to turn around after a while realizing if we went on, we probably wouldn’t have made it back to school on time. We passed by a few abandoned trucks and houses and we wondered if we mistakenly walked into a horror movie. Although our walk was brief, we all got photos to remember our two days of service.
Overall, the day was pretty fun, with us fully completing our work and even throwing in some fun nature activities into the mix!
