We started our day with a glorious bus ride to Bryn Mawr. Traffic was light, surprisingly, and we were all anxious to get working on our projects. As we arrived, we put our belongings inside the Harriton house and then went out to the forges to start the fires. Two of the fires started quite easily while the three others were struggling to stay lit. After multiple attempts, we got all of the fires to light. Bailey’s project – Grappling Hook II – was especially interesting because she had to weld four pieces of metal together. Bruce helped to handle the flame thrower and was successful in welding the metal pieces. Chris and Carina made finished their cow bells and Brent restored an old spoon. Some of us used the angle grinder to shape the metal into a specific shape and we used files to polish the rough edges. Along with Blacksmithing, many students spent the day wood-turning. Stephen made a small bowl, Todd made a decorative spindle and Bailey and Mr Newman made handle for tools they were making. Mr. Newman attempted to make a cup but failed. Bruce was extremely helpful in teaching us forging and wood turning skills and we all thoroughly enjoyed our time at the Harriton house this year!
