Chinatown: Music, Architecture, and Culture!

On Friday, the Asian Culture Club boarded the bus to Chinatown in Philadelphia! We first visited a bakery, to fill ourselves up for the day. Then, we traveled to an herb store (the cabinets in the left picture are filled with tons of different, natural healers), and tried some gouji. It was so shocking how the people who ran the store memorized which herb treats which condition! We also visited an Asian supermarket, which had very strong smells and lots of fruits and vegetables! On our way there, we all observed Chinese Architecture, like this gate on the right!

We were also going to visit a Buddhist Temple, however, the service did not end early enough, so we instead dropped by a Kung-Fu school, the master, and two senior students! There, we learned the art of the Lion Dance, Kung-Fu’s First Form, and the drums.

The lion dance was very specific with its movements, but enjoyable to perform with your partner! I personally had more fun in the back, however, others seemed to have just as much fun when in the front. Lots of smiles were partnered with the learning performers!

First Form was also very interesting, the way that the movements of it flowed together, like a dance, almost. Everyone had the skills to pull off the few bits first form that we learned!

Even though the drumming was difficult at first for some people, they quickly got the hang of it and were complimented for their new-found drumming skills!

After we posed for pictures and waved farewell to the people at the Kung-Fu school, we ate at a Chinese restaurant, which had lots of delicious food. The students were urged to eat with chopsticks, and the food was placed on a rotating wheel, so that everyone could claim their meal.

The last place we traveled to on our trip was a music school! The students got to try two IMG_1978amazing instruments, the Erhu and Guzheng! The teacher was a professional in music, and her skills were unmatched, but the students still had hidden skills IMG_1975themselves!
