Today, we spent most of our time working with clay — getting to know how the medium works and then creating elements of our first community artwork. As an opening exercise to awaken our creative spirits, we each formed and imprinted nine clay “pebbles” with our palm prints. We then gathered in Stokes Hall to assemble all of our palm print stones into one communal piece of art. It grew organically as we each added to the design, creating a final piece that was unique to the dynamic of our newly formed group. It was a great way to get to know everyone’s name too!
We then got started working on our individual elements for our ceramic totem poles that will be complete by Friday. We made slabs and orbs decorating them with designs and textures. It was an enlightening experience. While the process may have been messy, the final product will be well worth it.
