Day Two

We began the day with a riveting talk about the African-American history of Philly thanks to our entertaining tour guide Ernest.

He talked about how African-American women and children were significant to the history of Philadelphia, how Quakers came about, and how Pennsylvania came about. He talked about William Penn, and his Quakerism, as well as Betsy Ross and her Quakerism.

We then got on the trolley and took a tour around Philadelphia. We viewed many different historical buildings that portrayed the African-American influences on Philadelphia. The trolley took us all around Philadelphia, letting the group view different historical sites significant to Philly. During the tour we stopped at the Philadelphia Art Museum and raced up the stairs. Overall the tour was a fun learning experience that allowed us not only to learn about the history of Philly but also to enjoy a day with fellow classmates, our wonderful teachers Mr. Cotter and Mr. John, and our enthusiastic guide Ernest.

After the trolley tour, we headed to Reading Terminal Market, where we spent two hours eating and perusing the various shops and stores.  The market was crowded and reflected the varied and diverse nature of the different cultures that all reside in Philadelphia.  The market fully represented the melting pot of cultures and peoples that live side by side in Philadelphia.
