Day Two
Today we ventured to the Pine Island Cranberry Company facilities, where we met the owner, Bill Haines, and Kristina. They broke down their process of harvest throughout the seasons and showed us what each season entailed. They also took us out into the field to a dormant bog that was preparing for the upcoming season.
Next we visited Pakim Pond and were given a tour from Amy who worked for the PPA (Pinelands Preservation Alliance) which is a non-profit organization protecting the Pines. She showed us around the pond, showing us all the different flora and fauna that are native to the area.
On the way out we experienced one of the last for the season controlled forest fires in the Pine Barrens. These fires allow for the pine cones to open and the seeds to spread.
Overall, today was a very interesting day where we learned more about this very intriguing area so close to our school.
