Literary England: York and Haworth, Home of the Bronte Sisters

Today we ended our brief sojourn across the Scottish border and got back into the English countryside. We traveled from the extreme northwest of England to the northeast and then down to Yorkshire. We spent part of the day in York, home to the breathtaking Yorkminster Abbey. We toured windy and narrow medieval streets, climbed on the Roman walls surrounding the city, and saw the birthplace of Guy Fawkes, of Gunpowder Plot infamy. We then moved on to a tiny village on the moors, Haworth, best known as home to the Bronte sisters. Our local guide, Johnnie, took us to the church where Charlotte and Emily Bronte are buried, and he shared with us their amazing life story (he was such a good storyteller that many of us got swept up in the emotions of it all!). We headed back to our hotel and hope to return to Haworth tomorrow for some time in the village and a hike onto the moors to capture the experience that inspired Emily Bronte’s “Wuthering Heights.”
