Fifth Grade IL, Day Two: LS Classroom Visits

By Nathan & Isaiah

Today we went to the Lower School classrooms to teach them about composting. We have been learning about it all year, and we were so excited to share it with younger students at MFS! The first thing we did was make sure we had all of our supplies and lessons ready to go. After that, we headed over to our assigned Lower School classrooms. Each of the four advisories visited two LS classrooms, so while we’ve described specifics from Teacher Erica and Sarah’s advisories, the whole grade took part in similar activities!

In Teacher Erica’s advisory, we went to the 3M classroom first. There we did a presentation about how to compost. We made the presentation on our computers. Then we did slapjack where they had to see if it was compostable or not. We had the class split in half for the teams. We had a lot of fun in the slapjack game. The game ended up being very close.

In Sarah’s advisory, we went to class room 3B. There we gave a little speech on what composting is and what worm farms are. After that a classmate gave more information on how to make a worm farm. Then other classmates went over the rules of our memory game. After we explained the rules on how to play, we divided them into two groups. Then we started playing, the teams were very even, and it was neck and neck until the end. We had a really fun time. At the end, we let the third graders play with the worms.

In Teacher Erica’s advisory, our second class was Pre-K. We started with a presentation, like we did with the 3rd graders. We made the presentation a bit simpler, because they were younger. After the presentation, we set up four stations. The four stations were coloring, slapjack, a bin game, and arts and crafts. We had two fifth graders at each station. Then we took a picture before we left.

In Sarah’s advisory, class we went to Pre-K Hilgen’s class. There we gave a little speech on what composting is and how to do it. We also taught them what worm farms are. After that a classmate gave more information on how to make a worm farm. Then other classmates went over the rules of our memory game. After we explained the rules on how to play. Then we started playing, everyone wanted to play. It was a little hard for them so we made it easier by leaving the card up. We had a really fun time with the Pre-K students. At the end, we let the Pre-K kids hold the worms and name them.

We’re eager to head off on our camping trip to College Settlement tomorrow morning. Please help us remember to pack everything we need and prepare for the weather in the forecast!
