Folk Art, Day Three: Nature, Thread, and Kid Energy

After lunch, we spent time with the second graders creating luminaries. We had a fun time working with the students, using their energy and creativity to create projects that reflected their personalities. These luminaries are a great way to understand the concept of the Inner Light – how even though we may look different on the outside we all have the same light within. We also created a banner that we will use to remember our time together. This was definitely a highlight of our week so far.

Today we had a busy day filled with sunshine, knots, and kid energy.

Our first activity was a walk out along the nature trail behind the school. We spent some time thinking about the change in season from Winter to Spring, focusing on the cycles and rhythms of the natural world. Seeing the flowers blooming, the trees starting to bud, and the birds singing reminded us that we have started to turn the corner into the magic of Spring.

After our walk, we returned to Mr. Newman’s room to engage with our next project, macrame. This art form, used by sailors in the past, uses different types of knots to create art. We were able to dig into our creative side, incorporating beads into our designs to create keychains and other crafts. Each one of us enjoyed the hands-on nature of this project, and we look forward to continuing the work in the future.

Hitting the halfway point of IL is always bittersweet, as we have created a great working relationship with each other, and we are all looking forward to the next few days before we leave for spring break.
