Folk Art, Day Two — Basket Cases

Over the course of the past two days we have already built a small community, one where we support and help each other. We are looking forward to the next few days together as we continue to explore different types of art.

With the weather having taken a dreary turn, we had to pivot away from our planned nature hike to indoor (and more dry) activities. Today’s projects focused on baskets and luminaries.

Our day started by finishing the luminary projects we had started previously. These were glass jars covered in tissue paper, either in an abstract manner or with specific patterns. This project will be shared with the second grade classes tomorrow afternoon; stay tuned for pictures in our blog post tomorrow!

The rest of the day was spent exploring the ancient art of basket making. We worked in two different styles, weaving and threading. We learned how to create the bases and walls of the baskets, in one case weaving them together, and in the other by using waxed thread to build layer upon layer. While seemingly simple, we found that these projects took a surprising amount of time and focus.
