Food: Cooking, Culture, and Customs Day 3 Vietnamese Adventure

Today, we learned about James LoCascio’s experience as a chef and his process of becoming one. He regaled us with stories of his childhood, and his many encounters with famous people while in the restaurant business.

Later, we went to Sunseng Supermarket to shop for our upcoming cooking challenges for the next two days. We were given a budget of $30 and 45 minutes to shop for what we needed. While there, we saw many interesting and unique elderly folk as well as many uncommon ingredients such as pig’s blood and cow’s tongue.

After we made our purchases, we split up into two groups and each went to a Vietnamese restaurant. We ate such things as noodle soup and spring rolls. Many of us attempted to to use chopsticks and learned Chinese table manners. We also wrote reviews for both restaurants.

We had a great time learning about Asian food and culture and got lots of ideas for culinary challenges for the next few days.
