We began our fifth day of Food: Cooking, Culture, and Custom’s with a game of jeopardy centered around food and culture. We learned lots of cool, random fact about cooking. For example, we learned that forcing oil and water to mix is called emulsion. We also learned that evaporating all or virtually all water from food is called reducing. The winner of jeopardy received expert help or extra time during the ramen noodle cooking challenge that was to follow.
On day 3, all the groups had shopped for ingredients to make a creative dish that incorporated ramen noodles. Now today, we finally began cooking these ingredients with ramen with our groups. There was a diversity of dishes, from a mongolian stir fry to ramen noodle mac n’ cheese with bacon and onion. The winning group made a creative ramen noodle, marshmallow, and spice crispy treat. At around noontime, we had lunch. Many students walked uptown and enjoyed the beautiful day. After lunch, the SAGE dining staff generously gave us brownies, rice crispy treats, and fudge. As we ate, they explained to us how certain products and mixes made cooking a lot easier in recent years. They also showed us how to make a simple strawberry shortcake. It was a relaxing day filled with lots of food.
Tomorrow, the last day of Intensive Learning, all students will bring a dish for our potluck, many of which are tied to each student’s family culture.
