Galápagos: A Day on Isabella Island

Today we woke up at 5:30 and ate a quick breakfast of ham, eggs, and fruit before getting on the bus to head into the city. Once we arrived, we sat on the pier and waited for our water taxi to the boat. The group hastily boarded the boat named “Undertaker” and set off on a long two-hour boat ride to the island of Isabella.

The boat ride was full of excitement. We saw a group of dolphins that circled around the boat once we were almost halfway there. Once we got on to the island we were greeted by a group of friendly, yet aggressive, sea lions and resting aquatic iguanas. As we waited for the other boat to arrive we walked over to a shady area where six or seven sea lions were sleeping on park benches. The group posed for pictures with the resting beasts while we waited for the bus to arrive.

We then split up into our respective groups and walked towards the Flamingo Lagoon. There nestled in near an industrial building was a large crater-like lagoon. It had four flamingos and a couple of lagoon ducks living in it. After learning about the flamingos we went to the breeding center to look at even more tortoises. We saw nearly 100 tortoises ranging in size from 220 lbs to 2 lbs. After a quick ice cream and water break we set out on a walk to the beach for a quick dip in the water and some lunch. After lunch we went to a small store to buy even more ice cream and refreshments. Once the bus arrived again we traveled to a small lagoon where we snorkeled for an hour or so. Next was another boat ride back to the main island. After snacks in the city we left on the bus for our hotel in the highlands.
