Today, in our fifth day of Habitat for Humanity, we went to the Perkins Center of the Arts and helped them build raised planting beds for their garden. We built the frames out of 2 by 8s and filled them using dirt from a large pile that the Perkins Center had delivered last Friday. We used a very, very squeaky wheel barrel and were taught to respect all tools, as you never really know how much history a mallet has. They gave us pretzels and Coke for a job well done. We also helped them clear out another one of their completed gardens that had been overrun with weeds over the winter.
When we completed our hard half day of work, we headed back to school to eat lunch and watch some Arrested Development, featuring Michael Cera. Once our bellies were full, we all headed down to the Hartman Hall path to stain raised beds that the Environmental Club had made this weekend. This proved to be a difficult yet rewarding job if you didn’t mind getting your hands a little dirty. Finally, we returned to Mr. Thomson’s room to continue watching Arrested Development, featuring Michael Cera, and had some snacks. It was a much more interesting day than yesterday, as there was no squeegeeing involved.
