Yesterday was a very relaxed day. Our 3 a.m. departure made us very tired throughout the day, but we had a lot of time to relax at the airport on our two planes and at the hotel. Once we landed in the Dominican Republic, it was about a thirty minute drive to Santo Domingo, where we made our first stop to a super market to get water and snack. Though this may sound boring, it was actually very exciting to use pesos for the first time!

Then we got to the hotel and were surprised by how charming it was. A few of us swam, some threw around a football, played cards and napped before our 8 p.m. dinner at a cute Italian restaurant. After dinner we drove through the colonial part of the city and walked around there in search of a jazz concert that had just ended so we enjoyed the warm weather and the view instead. After a long day of travel, we were all exhausted and went right to bed after we got home!
Day 2: Today we did lots of sightseeing! In the morning we got breakfast and packed our bags in preparation to leave the hotel. From the hotel we went to see El Museo Del Hombre Dominicano, or the museum of the Dominican man. At the museum we learned a lot about the history of the Dominican Republic. Next we stopped at an ancient and beautiful cathedral. There we had an educational audio tour; it was fun to hear from someone who knew the cathedral so well.
Next, we ventured to where we would have our delicious lunch! Most of us had the authentic “Dominican Flag” meal, which consisted of the red, which was the beans; the white, which was the rice; and the green which was salad, and your choice of meat! After lunch we went to a jewelry shop where you could look at signature Dominican jewels. Then we stopped at a few more places to take pictures. Later we took a tour of Christopher Columbus’ son’s house. We took two more stops before driving to our next hotel. First we stopped at the building where Christopher Columbus’ ashes are located. We finished our day off with a tour of some beautiful caves. We finally got to our hotel at around 7 and ate dinner at 8. We’re excited to see what the next few days have in store!
