Day 6:
Today was yet another wonderful day in Cuba. We began with a delicious breakfast. Once our stomachs were content, we went on the roof of the church to continue the construction of dorms that began about six years ago. Although we aren’t expert builders, we assisted in the process of putting a smooth coat of cement on the walls by using our strength to move heavy materials and mix cement. After a few hours of relaxation, card games, and chatting, we had the opportunity to have a cultural exchange with students of a nearby high school. We talked with them and learned about how life is for children our age in Cuba, while also sharing our own experiences from back home. The conversations varied, but were very interesting. For example, we learned that although Cuban teenagers listened to similar artists, they have very little access to wifi and social media. Coming to the end of the exchange, our gifts to them were hats in our school colors, MFS athletic shirts, and soccer balls. To us they gave the gift of music; a local Cuban artist performed several songs and welcomed us all to join in. It was fun to share in a large part of their culture. Following the cultural exchange, we went to a nearby pool where we enjoyed each other’s company. Hungry after many hours of swimming, we had a filling buffet dinner of many delightful options. Once we were stuffed, we took a nighttime stroll to take a quick group photo, drove back to the church in our handy dandy truck, and then went to sleep. That concludes our sixth day in Holguín.
