Today was the first day of Intensive Learning, and our group had the pleasure of visiting Bayshore in Bivalve, NJ. We had the opportunity to help paint the outside of a boxcar that was renovated into a bathroom for the museum guests. After painting this boxcar, our tour guide Ken took us through the museum to experience the history of the oyster industry in this town. We learned about the oyster schooner AJ Meerwald, which is NJ’s official tall ship. Additionally, we learned about ship life and culture when Ken sung us a sea shanty that helps keep a rhythm for sail pulling. We then ventured outside to the dock where we saw a boat that was currently flooded by the high tide. Ken told us that sometimes the entire dock gets flooded over after a full moon. Today was a fun-filled experience and the group is excited to return on Monday!
