Low and Slow, Day One: Prepping for Next Week’s Barbacoa

On our first day of Intensive Learning, we were focused on prepping for all of our barbecuing next week. Firstly, we took a tour of Van Meter Hall’s basement to get familiar with the space we would be in for the next week. Next, we split up to collect firewood from different places around the school. Once we had all of the wood gathered, we got a lesson from Dan on how to split logs.

We next split up to accomplish different tasks. Some of us focused on splitting the remaining wood. Many of us focused on sorting through the smaller wood scraps we had, making sure all the wood we will use next week is safe and up to snuff. The rest of us started digging the fire pit that we will be using next week for barbacoa.

Once the pit was deep enough, we started laying bricks on the bottom and around the perimeter of it in order to contain the heat within the pit.

After we were done with our outside work, we headed into the kitchen with two tasks in mind: marinating our short ribs that we will cook on Monday, and making our lunch, the viral Gigi Hadid pasta. We all had different jobs, including chopping vegetables for our marinade, making pasta sauce, and cleaning all of our kitchen utensils. Once the pasta was finished, we all had lunch together.

After eating, we were lucky enough to have a blender lent to us, so we finished the marinade by blending the ingredients together. After the marinade was finished, we all got together and cleaned up the kitchen and the room we’re using as home base. All in all, today we were very successful in prepping for next week’s cooking, and we had a lot of fun in the process. We are looking forward to an enjoyable week!
