Nicaragua: Sharing music makes bonds

Today, after breakfast we walked again to Casa del Niño. We mixed rocks, sand, cement, and water to pour into the holes we made yesterday. Some of us removed nails from wood and others carried rocks to be put in the ground. The beams were still being painted with a few more to go. After we finished working we went into the music room where they performed several songs for us using guitars, recorders, keyboards, and their voices. We thanked them by singing Siyahamba, and it was great for us to bond over musically despite the language barrier.

We returmed to the hotel for lunch and we had a short rest period afterwards. We then traveled to an Eco-Tourism place where we took on the arduous task of an hour long hike. On the hike we learned about the different trees and plants used in the community. We also learned about the effects of climate change on the environment, and got to see a river that is starting to dry up. On our hike we saw coffee plants on the trail that are used to make organic coffee. Overall the hike was challenging, especially for those of us who didn’t have proper footwear, but the beautiful view of San Ramon and the neighboring towns and new knowledge made it all worth it.
