After a VERY long flight and a good night’s sleep, it was finally time for us to explore Japan! We started our day off with a hearty breakfast at our hotel and hopped on the bus to the Tokyo Rinkai Disaster Prevention Park, where we learned how to survive the 72 hours following natural disasters, such as earthquakes, tsunamis, and typhoons. Did you know that if you’re in an elevator during an earthquake, you should press as many buttons as possible to ensure the best chance of escape?
After our educational experience at the Disaster Prevention Park, it was time for lunch, and we headed to a mall next to the life-sized Unicorn Gundam Statue. At the mall, there were a plethora of food options, from udon, to steak, to cotton candy on ice cream. While there, we picked up a couple souvenirs from the stores in the mall before departing to our next destination.
After our lunch, we headed to Akihabara to visit a “Pedestrian Paradise” — a place where we may walk freely, without having to worry about cars. It’s a shopping district, and we were allotted free time to explore the stores. Buildings were giant, consisting of multiple floors that could all be one store or multiple stores sharing the same building, each having a dedicated floor for their service.
After we visited Akihabara we went to a sushi making class, where we learned how to make two different forms of sushi. We learned how to make Maki, which is a form of sushi roll containing, sushi rice egg, avocado, imitation crab, and cucumber. We also learned how to make Nigiri, which is a form of sushi involving raw fish, or egg, and sushi rice. The class was very interactive and was very tasty. After the class we took the subway home, and it was very crowded. After we arrived back at the hotel, our day ended.
