Clothes
- Lightweight pants, skirts, t-shirts, blouses. We do not recommend bringing more than one pair of shorts, as shorts are not normally worn here and expose one to more sun and bugs. Same goes with tank tops.
- During meetings with organizations, it is best to not dress too causally. Definitely dress comfortably, but no shorts and flip-flops please, as it can be seen as disrespectful. You may want to bring one nicer outfit for more formal occasions.
- Bathing Suit! (Modest as possible)
- Light jacket and long sleeve shirt for cool nights, especially in Madagalpa
- Plan to bring enough clothes for the entire trip, since hand-washing is the only option.
Shoes
- Walking/hiking shoes. These need to be comfortable for walking and that you don’t mind getting dirty.
- Flip flops for shower
- One nicer pair of shoes
- Sandals
Sun Protection — Hat, sunglasses, sun-block. We are much closer to the equator, so these protections are necessary.
Toiletries — Towel, shampoo, soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, etc.
Insect Repellent — Bring repellent with 25% DEET for use on skin, spray clothes with permethrin before leaving. Wearing pants and closed-toed shoes also reduce bites.
Medicine — If you have an epi-pen for allergies, bring it. Prescription medications, and bring back-up contacts or glasses if you wear them. Please bring vitamins that you usually take.
Cash — Please bring cash. You can rely on an ATM/Debit card as a back-up. All cash can be changed to Corodobas on the first day, and changed back at the end of the trip.
Misc. — Bookbag, camera, notebook, pen/pencil.
So excited for this trip. I have been planning this for years.
