Day One
Today the trip started off with a discussion of John McPhee’s Pine Barrens, where we all shared a chapter. We posed some questions about what our week might be like based on the information in the book.
We then took a bus out to Carranza Memorial, observing the effects of controlled burns, which help protect many species of pine trees.
We also observed the railroad tracks from the old Blue Comet rail line, which has been out of commission for over one hundred years.
After stopping at the Batona Campground for lunch, we hiked four miles of the Batona Trail to Apple Pie Hill, where some of us climbed the fire tower. It was quite a view!
We are very much looking forward to what next week will bring us!
