On the third day of our Pine Barrens IL, we visited Apple Pie Hill, hiked around four-and-a-half miles, and climbed the Pinelands’ central fire tower. While exploring the Apple Pie Hill, the notorious Jersey Devil showed itself to us to answer questions and make appearances in our videos.
When we were at the fire tower, which is considered the highest point in South Jersey, we collected some amazing pictures of the green landscape. We were even able to see Atlantic City and Philadelphia! We learned about prescribed burns and how fire towers are able to collaborate with each other in order to find wildfires.
After that, we went on a short hike at Franklin Parker Preserve, where we got to walk on the abandoned Central Railroad train tracks. We learned about the history and purpose of the tracks, and we were able to learn about the derailing of the Blue Comet. We also learned that the natural water bodies of the Pinelands supply drinking water throughout South Jersey and flow through rivers to the Jersey Shore, which keeps our beaches clean and healthy. At the end of our trip, we headed to the Evergreen Dairy Bar to enjoy frozen treats and headed back to Moorestown.
