Pine Barrens: Wildlife and Life in the Wild

Day Four

The first stop on our adventure today was the Woodford Cedar Run Wildlife Refuge. At the Wildlife Refuge we learned about the processes and care that are needed in nursing hurt animals back to health.  Some of the animals we saw included: owls, hawks, vultures, squirrels, foxes and deer.  We walked around to all of the animal cages and our guide showed us around the refuge. We learned about how some animals can be rehabilitated, but not released back into the wild, as they have lost their natural survival instincts. Those animals reside at the refuge for their natural lives; the others are only there temporarily. We were able to see turtles and snakes, though some  of the animals were hibernating because of the continuous and somewhat unseasonably cold weather.

We also visited Batsto Village which is a restored Iron Furnace Village from the early 19th century. While here we hiked about two miles while the weather warmed up a little more.

Though this is our last day in the Pine Barrens, we had a great experience and learned quite a bit about what we might consider our own backyard!
