Sacred Spaces Philly Day 4: Chenrezig Tibetan Buddhist Center of Philadelphia & Service at the DePaul House

We started off the day with a Buddhist faith encounter. At the Chenrezig Tibetan Buddhist Center of Philadelphia, our guide talked to us about the Buddha and how he lived his life. The Buddha taught people to live the concepts of Buddhism rather than simply study them. We also practiced a bit of meditation which we were taught disconnects you from the impermanent things in life.

For the second half the day today, we went to DePaul House for a service learning experience. We helped them clean up and organize specific areas. We broke up into three groups and completed the tasks we were given to make the living area better for the residents. One group organized the “closet,” organizing newly donated clothing, putting it designated areas making it easier for the residents to get to. Another group unpacked boxes in the pantry and organized it so it would be easier to get the food. And the last group helped plant the garden outside; they dug holes and added flower beds. All in all, it was a good day of learning about Buddhism and completing service.
