Day 2 for Sacred Spaces in Philly began at Food Share Community Kitchen building monthly grocery boxes for families in the Philadelphia area with food insecurities. The grocery items included cereal, milk, juice, pasta, and other canned goods. The students helped with not only packaging over 300 boxes, but building the actual boxes and placing them on wooden pallets for distribution.
Later, we met at the Interfaith Center of Greater Philadelphia for a workshop on how to solve and prevent societal issues involving hate towards religions. Our guide, Andrew, showed us a real hate ad that was advertised on SEPTA buses in Philly by a local hate group. The students worked in small groups to discuss and analyze the photo and develop a plan of action if this poster were to have appeared at MFS. It was an eye opening experience, and the best part was being able to share our creative plans involving the Quaker values of our school in addition to our own ideas or beliefs. Finally, we concluded the session by making posters with the hashtag, #DARETOUNDERSTAND, which happened to be created by the Interfaith Center of Greater Philadelphia. Amanda Augustino posted “Life is like a box of markers. It’s more beautiful when you use all the colors.”
Stay tuned for an exciting day of visiting SEVERAL places of worship!
