Seventh Grade: Day of Service at Palmyra Cove

By Sophia & Olivia

For our day of service, the Seventh Grade traveled to Palmyra Cove by the Delaware River. Since it was high tide this morning, our first activity was to remove invasive vines with giant shears. These vines are known to strangle trees, ultimately killing them and creating a tree-falling hazard. We also saw plenty of native wildlife including a deer, an eagle, and several different species of fish. It was refreshing to spend the morning outside with our classmates.

After we ate lunch, we explored Palmyra Cove’s nature center. This included models of the planets in the solar system and diagrams of the impact of waste. Everyone’s favorite exhibit was the geographical demonstration of sea levels. These fun demonstrations of science and engineering created an exciting way to learn about the impact of waste and our home planet.

Then we ventured outside to run a beach clean up. We were given “trash grabbers” to scan the shoreline and remove as much waste as possible. Although the weather was cold, our spirits were high! Therefore, we were able to gather over 30 bags of waste on the beach, which included bottle caps, plastic wrappers, styrofoam, etc. We also found lots of animal bones! With our experience of handling unrecycled supplies, we are sure to be prepared for our trip to the Recycling Center on Monday.
