Morning
By Caleb & Kerry
After two days in D.C., we were tired but excited to start our day at MFS. This morning we watched our DEI documentaries that we filmed in Quest as part of our unit on the Quaker SPICE of Equality. It was clear that every group had put in a lot of care and hard work into their documentary. Some documentaries were informational, while others had a humorous effect. While watching, we ate snacks, completed a reflective worksheet, and had a good time. It was very nice to be able to relax after a very eventful trip. Then, we had a break. It was a time to decompress and stretch our legs with our friends. We were originally just loitering around the middle school hallway, but Mr. Rizzo came out and humorously told us to go on an important adventure: touching Mrs. Bruvik’s door, which is all the way downstairs in the basement. We moaned and complained, but then we went and laughed with our friends as we meandered down the hallway to Mrs. Bruvik’s door. We touched it and walked back upstairs to the library where we started our next activity.
For our next activity, Mrs. Bruvik led us in planning for tomorrow’s Meeting For Worship. We also completed a gratitude worksheet where we dug deep and thought about all the moments from the past week where we felt grateful and happy. After that, we had lunch. It was quieter, because we were the only grade in the Middle School that was there. We felt like we were the rulers of the Middle School. We’d like to thank the teachers for making this wonderful morning possible!

Afternoon
By Sarah & Alana
After spending time with our friends at lunch and recess, we got ready to do an IL-inspired mosaic mural. First, Mr. Haine-Roberts went through a slideshow to remind us about the activities we had partaken in so far. The mural was a creative break as well as a representation of our IL experience.
The first thing we needed to do in our four step process was think of a symbol to represent our favorite part of IL. Many of us jumped at the idea to paint dinosaurs and the Washington Monument. It was also a bit of a race to the art room, where we sketched out our designs and then got to painting. Thanks to Ailsa for helping us with all the technical skills. Some people used abstract shapes and colors while others drew specific places to represent our week of IL. There was a lot of trial and error when it came to how much water to use and how to stick down the stencils, which was very difficult. Even though we worked hard, our projects came down to the wire before dismissal. Some of us were stressed for time and started yelling, “13 MINUTES?!” Following the chaos that had ensued, people made their way back to the library after finishing their tile, begging for another round of snacks left over from our D.C. trip.
We have had an amazing week of IL and are excited to finish up the week with our special MFW.
