For our second day in Washington, D.C., we traveled to the Smithsonian’s National Zoo with the goal of connecting the animals inside the zoo with this year’s theme of Intensive Learning, art and environment. There’s no way to really learn about art and the environment without knowing the true meaning of diversity. The zoo gave us an introduction and diversity through the animals in different habitats and environments.
The seventh grade split up into smaller groups and explored the zoo with a chaperone. Not only did we get to experience the new environment, but we were also able to enjoy it with friends.
Something that made this trip even more memorable was the weather. It was raining, which gave seventh graders the opportunity to see the animals adapt to their environments in different situations; this ties back to diversity. An example of this characteristic of adaptation was located in the Great Ape House, where an Orangutan shielded themself from the rain by holding a towel over itself.
This trip gave seventh graders a chance to go out of their comfort zones by adapting to the harsh weather conditions, which therefore gave us an experience that we will never forget.
