Sewing For Babies Day 2: Nurse-Family Partnership Visit

Today, we visited the Nurse-Family Partnership (NFP) in Philadelphia. The organization helps first time mothers living in low income households who need support, not only physically but mentally and emotionally as well. Their organization guides them through pregnancy and the first two years of their child’s life.

When we arrived, we were greeted by two friendly staff members, whose names were Erin, and Breanne. They are two supervising members for the organization, and they have been working with the organization for many years now. After doing a brief introduction, they brought us to a large conference room in the back of their office, and told us about the goal of the program. They had a very creative introductory activity, where each of the twelve students explained what one of the NFP values meant to them. Mainly, we focused on these five client-centered
values: Focus on Solutions, Focus on strengths, Follow the client’s heart’s desire, Only a small change is necessary, and The client is the expert of her own life. After that we talked a lot about what they do, did some activities, heard from some of their lawyers who help the clients, and then we ended by watching an emotional video about their work.

After leaving NFP, we proceeded to drive to a Wawa to get our lunches, which were very delicious. While eating our lunches, our group discussed how we enjoyed seeing where our work will be heading, as we will be sending our work there at the end of the week. From there we proceeded to work on our projects, and many of us have now completed our second project of the week, and cannot wait to do more!
