Songwriting, Day Five: Adventuring With Songwriting

Today we toured the Gradwell House Recording Studio and learned a lot of new stuff about recording music. We learned about the basics of recording work, how to make a good recording of live instruments, and how to make a high quality sound track along with the conditions needed.

The studio is in Haddonfield, next to other businesses, and the company has been around for more than 20 years. Their goal is to be a studio that is affordable for as many people as possible. They believe that “producing music can be expensive; we try to generally keep our prices low.” This is legendary for a company to do despite inflation.

The basics of recording need good quiet rooms with a lot of space, which is something the tour guide mentioned. Lots of space would be used for multiple types of instruments and microphones, which are separated into different tracks in the control booth. In the control booth, the separate tracks were used to change the sound of certain instruments or effects, which can generally make a song better.

As we went through the booth, the guide played a Beyoncé song that had a lot of bass, and blew my ears off. The room is designed to amplify bass and make it more ‘bassy’ which definitely gave me a headache. Besides that, it was very cool to be on the other side of the glass to produce songs like in movies. The equipment and different rooms were used by different types of groups, with a good amount of popular bands using them – which is good business in my opinion.

We also went to Ralph’s Pizza and ate delicious pizza and chicken for lunch. I got the tomato and garlic pizza, while Olivia got the cheese steak; the food there was very yummy. and it also came in big portions. Olivia very much recommends the cheese steak; she said she’d literally die for it.

Waiting for our bus, we went into Troublesome Brewing, which was kinda fire. I had a chocolate croissant and bought a water bottle. The entire thing cost only $5 and inflation is scary, but I was very happy. Now I’m sitting here full off of the cheesesteak and croissant.
