Looking back on our experiences, I’m really grateful to have been a part of this program. Not only did I get to spend time doing something that I love with some of my closest friends, I also learned a lot too. I learned about refrains and verses, collaboration and careers, recording and mixing, and how to always specify you want only a slice of pizza. I can’t thank our teachers Mr. Howard and Dr. K enough. They did an amazing job of running this whole show and keeping us interested. I look forward to continuing my music journey with the newfound knowledge I’ve gained from this IL. I’m also very grateful because of this experience. It has given me the chance to talk to people I wouldn’t usually talk to and learn more about music and the production and process of songs.
The final day of our songwriting seminar arrived in a bittersweet fashion. We’ve come so far and learned so much that it feels wrong to stop here, but I’m sure many of us will continue our musical journey into the future.
We kicked off our half day by filling out a survey (surprise, surprise) about our experiences during IL. Afterwards, we continued to work on our group songs from yesterday until 9, when we all went to the DHC for our bagel breakfast! The breakfast provided us with an opportunity to hang out with some friends in other ILs and see what everyone has been up to. The bagels were also very delicious. While we ate, my friends and I got into a very heated match of online Uno, which gathered a large crowd of spectators.
After that was over, we came back to the band room and kept working on our songs. Other groups dispersed around the school, but my group stayed in the band room. We got rather far along yesterday, so we finished quickly. While waiting for the others we just hung out and marveled at our song.
At 11, it finally came time to present our songs. My group took the opportunity to go first and described our writing and production process. Then we played our song, which we believe was well received. The other groups followed suit, with some even playing live. I personally really enjoyed this process. It gave us a chance to hear other people’s musical ideas and explore them together. It was also nice to have a very positive environment for those who were nervous to get up and present. All in all, it was a chill day with a satisfying end.
