South Jersey Service, Day Four: Ronald McDonald House

Today, we visited the Ronald McDonald House, which houses families whose children are receiving medical care at local hospitals. My group went upstairs to Johnny’s Clubhouse, a playroom for children to play in when it’s cold or raining. My group threw out old toys, cleaned and organized toys, and brought new toys up. We didn’t work with people today, but when we brought the new toys up we were able to see one of the residents’ reactions, and it made the whole day’s work worthwhile. I’m happy that we were able to bring a smile to someone who’s going through a very troublesome situation.

Today, my friends and I worked in the toy storage helping sorting and cleaning out toys. This was a learning experience because I didn’t realize how many toys the Ronald McDonald House receives as donations. There were shelves 10 feet high stacked with toys, and there were still toys on the ground. This was an eye-opening experience because it showed that there are still many people who care about the Ronald McDonald House’s mission. This is one of these prime examples that shows us service is not only helping those that don’t have enough, but those who are in need of mental or physical support like these children with these illnesses.

Adrian, Vincent, Kelly, and I were working in the food pantry checking food expiration dates, making sure that all the food served to the people living in the house were safe and fresh. Doing this will reduce the workload of the staff and volunteers working at the house, which is very meaningful. I really admire the staff who continuously contribute their time and energy to help the families around the world. I am also impressed how organized and renovated the house is.
