Spain/Andalucía: La Fundación Escuela de Solidaridad

Today we woke up and ate some freshly made bread for breakfast with many authentic sides such as marmalade, tomato spread and cheese. We then moved into our groups to start our service work for the day.  The service work we did today was making marmalade, jewelry making, working in the garden, and working on the mural.

The marmalade making was a lot harder than expected. It consists of peeling the oranges, removing the seeds, and scraping all of the bitterness out of the peels and chopping it into fine slices.

The garden needed much work. We had to hoe all the weeds, being careful not to weed the plants. The FES community grows an organic garden that helps sustain the community.

The mural was a big job. The mural represents FES and its community. The mural work consisted of MFS creating a design, breaking tiles and glass, putting the tiles on the brick wall with concrete, and arranging the pieces within the drawn outline. This mural has been a work of love not only for the FES community but also for the MFS group. At the end of the night, we all enjoyed a nice farewell dinner with some ice cream.

Spending our last day in FES was a great way to end our stay in Granada!!

Some trivia, can you translate the slogan of the Fundación? “Lo que guarde, no lo tengo, lo que tengo, la perdí, solo tengo lo que di”
