Thriving Now and Beyond, Day Five: Haverford College

Touring Haverford and exploring the aspects of student life and general environment was a great way for us to close our collegiate exploration during this Intensive Learning experience. Although we’re all sad this is our last stop, it certainly doesn’t mark the end of Thriving Now and Beyond. We’ve still got one more day and look forward to closing an incredible yet short chapter of this school year!

Today marked our final college visit – Haverford College located in Haverford, Pennsylvania. And, fun fact, Haverford started as a Quaker institution, and still carries some Quaker tradition with it! It tends to be popular with graduating MFS students and where many MFS teachers and faculty called home in their college years. With that said, let’s focus on today’s events in this installment of Thriving Now and Beyond!

Unlike our previous campus experiences, we began our day with a guided tour around Haverford’s campus rather than starting with an informational session on the institution. This tour was similar to our other guided visits with many campus facilities shown including the STEM-focused building, dormitories, and dining commons. Although a smaller institution, Haverford looked incredible with lots of diverse buildings and beautiful landscapes throughout.

Afterwards, we walked to Haverford’s informational session which stood out compared to the previous day’s sessions as the speaker included insightful tips for essay-writing, a key part of the college admission process. Otherwise, it provided general information about the college make-up and history alongside admission info.

Following the info session we had lunch with a Haverford Admissions officer and current Haverford student RJ McFadden ’24, who graduated from MFS last year. The dining experience was pretty good in terms of both quality and variety. Our time with RJ and the admissions officer allowed us to get a greater sense of the Haverford community and general tips when applying to colleges.

It’s still not over yet! After our meaningful lunch time experience, we met the director of admissions Kate Abels, and got the chance to ask her some of our more burning questions about the “why” for colleges which was truly something incredible. We would’ve never guessed something like that would happen.
